The Teacup Shih Tzu dog breed has a jovial disposition and behave well with children because they mostly act like kids themselves. The Teacup Shih Tzu will never get tired of being petted and played with, they feed off it. On the other hand, if left to their own devices, some individuals can be ruinous and grumpy to say in the least. This is because the Teacup Shih Tzu craves being the center of attention. Teacup Shih-Tzu Dog Breed Appearance:
Teacup Shih Tzu dogs can either keep to the traditional long length that can reach to the ground or a short clip. The longer hair demands daily and frequent brushing to keep tangles or clumps from forming. Shih Tzu owners frequently have the coat clipped short to lower the requirement for daily maintenance. A simpler method is where the Shih Tzu’s hair is tied on top of their head in a pony tail. The Teacup Shih Tzu’s coat has a long soft exterior coat with a soft thick under coat. The standard height of a Teacup Shih Tzu should be less than 8 inches at the withers and have a weight less than 9 pounds. Drop ears are covered with long fur, and the heavily furred tail is carried curled over the back. There is no limit as to what color the coat may be. It is customary for a Teacup Shih Tzu to have highlights of white on the forehead and tail-tip. The Shih Tzu should have a longer torso than the height of the dog.

Teacup Shih Tzu Dog Breed History and Origins:
The first dogs of the breed were not imported into Europe (England and Norway) until 1930, and were classified by the Kennel Club as “Apsos”. The standard was revised for the breed during 1935 in England and the dogs were categorized as Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu dog breed reached its way to the US soon after World War 2. During 1969 the AKC accepted the Shih Tzu and entered them in the toy Group classification. Today the Shih Tzu is accepted by kennel clubs worldwide. The Teacup Shih Tzu or any of the teacup sized dog breeds have yet to be recognized by kennel clubs. There are many groups that have organized to shed light on the Teacup Shih Tzu dog breed. Teacup Shih Tzu Dog Breed Mortality:
Teacup Shih Tzu’s have a longer length of back much like the “Weiner Dog,” and are prone to slipped discs. Being more careful when you pick up or set down your Teacup Shih Tzu will help limit back problems. Due to having floppy ears and long hair around the ears, infections to those areas are prominent if regular cleaning is not done. Preventative dental programs are also available to prevent early tooth decay and loss that is common. Most Teacup Shih Tzu’s will actually need teeth pulled due to over crowding. Due to the shape of the nasal canal the Teacup Shih Tzu can easily develop upper respiratory problems.
Teacup-size dogs, or Toy dogs, suffer breed specific problems. There is no exception to the rule when it comes to the Teacup Shih Tzu Breed. There are several diseases that the Teacup Shih Tzu is born with that can be corrected with good solid blood lines. If you start in the early development of the Teacup Shih Tzu’s life, you can sustain and keep a healthy Teacup Shih Tzu.

Teacup Shih Tzu Summary:
With so many bad breeders out there, future Teacup Shih Tzu dog owners need to be on alert. Asking questions of the Teacup Shih Tzu dog breeders about health certificates, or parentage of their puppy. Also being able to drive to the breeder and pick up the puppy is better than shipping so you can get an idea of what kind of socialization they’ve experienced. Teacup sized dogs do best when handled a lot from puppy-hood.
