Canaan Dog Dog Breed Origins:
The forerunners of the modern Canaan Dog date well back into Biblical times, in the land of Canaan which is now part of modern-day Israel and Palestine. The Bedouin dog of the deserts in the area bares resemblance to the Canaan, though they were somewhat larger and more aggressive as they were bred purely for guard duty. Breeds like this are referenced throughout history in the area.

In the 1930s, Dr. Rudolphina Menzel, decided to take the breed roaming around the desert and use their intelligence to protect Jewish settlements. They were essentially being bred and trained to be service and guard dogs. 1934 saw the beginning of official breeding programs, producing puppies for homes and military alike. By the late 1940s the breed had progressed so well, that they began to be established as a popular guide dog for the blind. They were very smart and easy to train thanks to intelligence, even-temper and high adaptability. The Canaan dog breed found its way to the United States in the 1960s and to Canada and the UK in the 1970s.

Shih-Poo Puppy

Shih-Poo Dog Breed Origins:
The Poodle has two extremely desirable traits that most dog owners want. Firstly, they are recognized as one of the smartest dog breeds in existence, along with Border Collies and German Shepherds.  The second attribute that is highly coveted is their single coat, low shed and allergy-friendly fur.  The look of the Poodle is very specific and it’s not everyone favorite.  Many people would like to extend the desirable traits of the poodle into other breeds that they enjoy.  Thus the cross-breeding process has found the Poodle being used in many variations.  The Shih-Poo takes the history and quality of the Poodle breed and works to fuse it into the Shih-Tzu.  It helps to reduce the breathing issues and temperature sensitivity that some Shih Tzus have.  The Shih-Poo is a relatively new cross-breed, so the results may vary.

Shih-Poo Dog Breed Appearance:
The Shih-poo will receive traits from both parents.  Size will also be dependent on parents. The coat colors will be an combination of their parents colors, and the coat itself will long and either straight, curly or some combination in-between.  An average weight for the breed  is approximately 8 pounds, but they can range anywhere from 5 to 15 depending on which parent they take more of their characteristics from.  Similarly, their height ranges from 8-12 inches at the shoulder.

Shih Poo Puppy

Shih-Poo Puppy

Shih-Poo Dog Breed Temperament:
Shih-Poo share a range of temperaments between the full extents of both the poodle and Shih-tzu breeds.  The general traits that you can expect for the Shih-Poo breed are that they are active, affectionate, loyal and loving.  They are not good watch-dogs or guard-dogs, but they will bark at times to alert.  In general, Shih-Poos are not for homes with small children, though some homes have been able to acclimate them to this situation.  They will do well with older childrem, other dogs and other pets, this is helped with early and regular socialization.  Shih-Poo can suffer from separation anxiety; they do not do well be left alone for long periods of time.  Lack of mental exercise and interaction can leads to many destructive behaviors and lots of barking. See Cute Puppies For Sale’s thorough Dog Breed Index to locate Shih-Poo Puppies for Sale from reputable breeders near you.

Shih-Poo Dog Breed Mortality and Health:
Shih-Poos are relatively new, so as you can see numbers are general ranges.  They can live anywhere from 12-17 years.  In general they loose any of the possible health problems of either breed, though, as with any cross, issues from either parent are possible to a degree. As we discussed, the poodle traits tend to lessen or completely eliminate any of the breathing issues found in the Shih-Tzu side of the dog.  Litter sizes range from 4-6 puppies. These are not very active dogs, so heavy activity families are probably not the best for these dogs. The Shih-Poo is a generally healthy dog breed.

Shih-Poo Dog Breed Overview:

Kishu Dog Breed (Kishu Ken)

On June 24, 2011, in Dog Breeds, Working, by admin

Kishu Dog Breed Introduction:
The Kishu also known as Kishu Ken or Kishu Inu is perhaps the oldest of the Japanese spitz-style dog breeds, predating both the Akita and Shiba. The Kishu breed is a family-friendly, loving and intelligent breed of medium size that is very rare not only throughout the world but in their native Japan as well. Visit our comprehensive breeder directory to find Miniature Australian Shepherd Puppies for sale close by.

Kishu Puppies for Sale

Kishu Puppy

Kishu Dog Breed Origins and History:
In Japan, the spitz-stle dog breed, which became the Kishu has been bred for more than 3,000 years. The breed remained isolated in the mountains on the island of Kyushu (an island in the south of Japan) for quite awhile. This created a very pure stock of dogs. Their original purpose was to hunt deer, board and at times even bear. When hunting, the Kishu is fierce and focused. Kishus, like the other Japanese spitz dogs are silent hunters, slowly stalking prey, without barking and cornering it until the hunter can take their shot, earning them a Japanese phrase that mean “One dog, one shot”. Some Kishu in Japan are still hunters, but in general, they are simply family dogs and companions now.

In 1934 the Kishu Ken was designated as a National Treasure in Japan. As a result their numbers abroad and even at home are very limited. Exporting of the dog has severe restriction put in place and breeders outside of Japan are scarce, with only currently one breeder in the United States. At this time there is only one European breeder as well in the Netherlands, so the number of Kishu Ken puppies available throughout the world is very small.

Kishu Inu Puppy

Kishu Ken Puppy

Kishu Dog Breed Appearance:
Your Kishu puppies will begin to grow to a size of 17-22 inches tall and will weigh anywhere from 30-60 pounds. The Kishu is predominately pure white dog, brindle coloring and red are possible, however not acceptable under breeding standards. Their noses are almost always black though may be pink or brown as well. Their appearance is quite similar to shibas, akita and other Japanese spitz styles. Their coat is coarse, short and straight and features a thick undercoat. The tail is curled towards the back and there is fringe on both the tail and cheeks. They are a sleek and well-muscled dog breed.

Kishu Dog Breeder

Kishu Dog Breed

Kishu Dog Breed Temperament:
The Kishu Ken is a somewhat reserved dog. They are best with one family and usually bond to a single person within that family. They are very intelligent but also very stubborn. They are very independent, combined with stubbornness this makes training essential and sometimes challenging. However, with consistent work it should come fairly easily. They are leaders and can be dominate with other dogs and children. Socialize them early with other dogs and kids in order to alleviate any pack dominance. Housebreaking is usually easy. The hunting drive remains strong with the breed, so families with other small pets are probably not an ideal situation for the Kishu. This is an active, outdoor-loving dog, family that are inside-oriented, don’t have much time for their pets and don’t do a lot of exercising will not do well with this breed. See Cute Puppies For Sale’s thorough Dog Breed Index to locate Kishu Puppies for Sale from reputable breeders near you.

Kishu Inu Dog Breeder

Kishu Inu Breed

Kishu Dog Breed Mortality and Health:
Due to their high energy and hunting instincts, this is not a dog to be kept cooped up in a kennel or apartment. They need to be active and spend lots of time with the family, particularly whomever they have bonded with. Like Shibas, they are extremely athletic, a very tall fence is required if you don’t want to spend lots of time chasing them down. Check the your Kishu Puppy out with your vet on a regular basis, keep their nails trim and ears cleaned to avoid any possible infections. The Kishu is a very health dog breed.

Kishu Dog Breed Overview:
If you own a Kishu, you own one of the most ancient and yet rare dog breeds in the world. A Kishu has a classic Japanese-spitz style look and a high level of intelligence and loyalty. For the family who has the proper time to train, care for and interact with their dogs, a Kishu puppy or Kishu puppies will be a great find. Miniature Australian Shepherd Dog Breed Origins and History:
The Australian Shepherd’s origins have been lost over time as discussed on their breed page. It is known that the original Aussie was very different than the modern day version of the breed. The original Aussie didn’t receive recognition in the ASCA until 1957. It was shortly after that time, that in 1968, breeders began to develop what was then known as the North American Miniature Australian Shepherd, using the smallest shepherds available. This was led by a woman named Doris Cordova. All modern Miniature Australian Shepherds came from those original stocks. Today, breeders continue to work at refining the Minnie Aussie to be a replica of the the parent breed just in a size that fits with modern convenience and popularity. They do this without losing the great instincts and traits of the original breed.

Again, they have the same look of the full-sized breed just in smaller dimensions. They have an inquisitive and happy look most of the time. The Miniature Aussie grows to be anywhere from 14 to 18 inches tall at the withers and weighs between 17 and 30 pounds. The Toy Australian Shepherd version has an even smaller height than the mini at 10-14 inches.

Start socializing your Miniature Australian or Toy Australian Shepherd at an early age and you will find them highly adaptable to all sort of situations, from children to dogs and other pets. They have a high social drive, so leaving them alone for long periods of time is not ideal as they will form separation anxiety and act out with bad behavior. They are excellent with families, just be aware of their small size when letting children handle them. Miniature Australian Shepherd Dog Breed Mortality and Health:
The main issues with Toy Aussies and Miniature Aussies are the same as with all Australian Shepherds. These can cause problems from mild discomfort to blindness. Get regular checkups for your dog, particularly your Miniature Australian Puppies to try and catch any of these issues early on. Aussies along with several other dog breeds sometimes carry the MDR1 gene, which can lead to issues with drug reactions, your Miniature Australian Puppy can be tested for this issue.

Miniature Australian Shepherd Dog Breed Overview:
The Miniature Australian Shepherd Puppy (and also Toy Aussie) takes all of the traits that you known and love in an Australian Shepherd and reduces them down to a compact size. Resulting in a beautiful, active and intelligent little dog that is extremely loving and loyal. Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed

On June 20, 2011, in Dog Breeds, Herding, by admin

Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed Introduction:
The Lancashire Heeler also known as the Ormskirk Heeler or Ormskirk Terrier comes from an area northwest of Wales in England. More specifically they are traced to the farmlands of Orsmkirk a small town in West Lancashire England. These small dogs have a history ratting and herding on small farms along the countryside and are now mostly companion dogs for European families.

Lancashire Puppies for Sale

Lancashire Puppies

Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed Origins and History:
The Lancashire Heeler is believed to have originated with the Welsh Corgi (they share many characteristics of this breed) in the Omskirk area outside of Wales. As long as a 150 years ago a black and tan style terrier dog known as the Manchester Terrier ruled the area. This mixed with the Welsh Corgi type produced what is now called the Lancashire Heeler. As the need for farming dogs in the area decreased, so did the numbers of the dog, greatly. So much so that today’s Lancashire Heeler is considered to be a recreation of the original breed. In the 1960s the interest in the breed returned. In 1978 the Lancashire Heeler Club was created in the UK under the guidance of one Gwen Mackintosh.

Lancashire Heeler Puppy for Sale

Lancashire Heller Puppy Dog

Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed Appearance:
Like the Corgi, the Lancashire Heeler is very low to the ground with very short legs and a long body. They have large and wide ears that point upwards. Their chests are long and deep and their backs are very strong to go along with strong hindquarters. Their short tails are set high and carry forward towards the back. The Lancashire Heeler has a simple undercoat with a harsh and smooth overcoat, making them somewhat water resistant. Lancashires are most often black and tan, however liver and tan is now also acceptable. Appearance of the dog should match disposition with happy, playful and energetic qualities on display.

Lancashire Puppy

Lancashire Puppy Dog

Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed Temperament:
The breed is surprisingly strong, something you might not expect when first looking for Lancashire puppies for sale. Lancashires have a natural drive for herding and ratting and their small size makes them prone to be somewhat defensive of rough interaction. These traits are nigh impossible to remove so they are best left to homes with only older children. Lancashires have a tendency to nip at heels to go along with the herding instinct, this can be trained away, however the breed can be quite stubborn when it comes to obedience. Be aware of their tendencies when taking them into any household, early socialization and consistent training can help the dog to lessen undesirable traits, however you cannot fully remove this dogs instincts. See Cute Puppies For Sale’s thorough Dog Breed Index to locate Lancashire Heeler Puppies for Sale from reputable breeders near you.

Lancashire Heeler Puppies

Lancashire Puppy Dog

Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed Mortality and Health:
Lancashires are generally healthy dogs. They live, on average, between 12 and 15 years; longer is possible. The main areas of concern for the Lancashire Heeler are the eyes. There are three serious conditions that can cause problems for the Lancashire. They are Persistent pupillary membranes, primary lens luxation and Collie eye anomaly. These issues are mostly inherited and can cause anything from mild discomfort to cataracts and even blindness. Work with your breeder and your veterinarian to be aware of these issues in your own Lancashire puppies. Luxating patella is also a potential issue. Don’t be fooled by the dog’s size, they have a ton of energy and agility. Keep these Lancashires active and you will have a healthy, happy, long-term companion.

Lancashire Heeler Dog Breed Overview:
Lancashire Heeler puppies are a great addition to most any home. Owners that are prepared to deal with a dog that has a strong herding instinct and can be stubborn will be rewarded with an awesome dog that looks adorable. They can even still be used as herders if that’s what you are looking for. Either way Lancashire puppies will be joy and energy to your home. Stabyhoun Puppy

Stabyhoun Dog Breed Origins and History:
The Stabyhoun comes from Friesland, a northeastern province of the Netherlands. Most breed histories attribute their initial origins to spaniel dogs brought over during the mid 1500′s to mid 1600′s at the time of the Spanish Occupation. The first written description of the Stabyhoun breed appeared in the 1800′s. The dog was then used as a hunter and retriever of small game. It also excelled at pointing and tracking much like the most popular gundog breeds do. It later become the popular choice of poor farmers who appreciated the breed’s versatility. This gained the Stabyhoun much popularity in the Netherlands, however it wasn’t until 1942 that the breed was fully recognized there. It was at this time that they discontinued all cross-breeding with another local favorite, the Wetterhoun, a more popular Dutch hunting breed. Breed enthusiasts are working under very careful and strict guidelines to slowly increase the numbers of the dog. This ensures dogs that meet the breed specifications and limits inherited disease, it also means the dog remains incredibly rare and virtually unknown outside of it’s native land.

They have a good amount of speed and are quite agile, so they will love to perform tasks and works, including on land and in the water. They are fairly hardy when it comes to weather and cold temperatures as well. Their combinations of intelligence, speeds and agility make them easy entrants into agility trials and related dog shows. They may still be used on farms and for work, which will satisfy their needs for daily exercise, but are most often now found as household companions. Euraiser Puppy

Eurasier Dog Breed Origins and History:
The Origin of the Euraiser dog breed can be directly traced back to 1960 (we said it was a young breed!), and the work of two individuals by the name of Charlotte Baldamus and founder Julius Wipfel set out with a few other dog enthusiasts to take this breed. The goal was to combine, “the best qualities of the Chow Chow and the Wolfspitz”. Initially the breed was named Wolf-Chow. In the next dozen years the breed was then crossed with the Samoyed resulting in the most current version of the breed, known as the Eurasier. The belgian Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed in 1973.

The breed is slowly gaining in popularity thanks in part to the three European kennel clubs that support the group and directly control it’s breeding. Popularity was also bolstered by the Euraiser receiving inclusion as a “Working Dog” but the Canadian Kennel Club in the mid-nineties. As the breed becomes more recognized, imposters are popping up to try and capitalize on the breed in many other countries. Be ware of imposter breeds created by Keeshond/Chow chow mixes that lack the years of refinement and addition of Samoyed traits in the Euraiser dog breed.

Euraiser Dog Breeders

Euraiser Dog Breed

Eurasier Dog Breed Temperament:
Euraiser puppies are a mostly quiet dog breed, with even-tempered and laid-back personality. They are friendly and affectionate and at the same time alert and watchful. They can be quite shy and reserved around those unfamiliar to them (both people and other pets). Early socialization will help to ease this trait, you don’t want your pet to go to either extreme (timidity or aggressiveness) due to a lack of familiarity with other people and pets. They are quite intelligent, making them fairly easily trainable as long as a gentle yet firm approach is used. Because they are smart, training must be mixed up. Lack of variety in training will lead to the dog becoming bored and disinterested. They can act as alert dogs, as they will usually bark once to indicate something unfamiliar to them, but they are not guard dogs. See Cute Puppies For Sale’s thorough Dog Breed Index to locate Eurasier Puppies for Sale from reputable breeders near you.

Check with your breeder for any health issues within the line and as always keep regular veterinary appointments to maintain a healthy and happy Euraiser puppy. The breed will live on average about 12 years.

They combine traits of the Samoyed, Chow Chow and Keeshond breeds are very beautiful, well-mannered and loving dogs.
