English Mastiff Dog Breed Temperament:
Throughout the decades the English Mastiff dog breed has presented future owners with a fond calm and affectionate temperament. Though when defending what they consider their territory or their master, it is capable of unleashing extreme protocol for protection. When approached by a stranger instincts drive the English Mastiff to position itself between its master and the stranger. Animals can feel things that humans cannot. If an approaching person is perceived as a threat, be prepared that the English Mastiff won’t hesitate to act defensively to protect their master. An English Mastiff with manners is generally good natured, calm, easygoing, and when you take away the size factor is quite the exceptional family pet.

The English Mastiff dog breed is without a doubt, the most robust of the large breed dogs. With such a massive torso, broad boxlike skull, and general square shaped form, it is one of the largest dog breeds in terms of sheer girth. The Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane may lead the pack when it comes to height, but they are no match for the stoutness of the English Mastiff.
The English Mastiff dog breed has a large body with strong depth causing the forelegs to be wide set apart. The AKC standard height for the English Mastiff dog breed is 27.5 -30 inches, and a weight ranging from 120-250 pounds. It is not common, but long haired English Mastiff’s called “Fluffies” are occasionally seen. They are not show quality, but still a good specimen of English Mastiff. The English Mastiff coat standard for show should be short and close-lying with colors of apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, fawn, or dark fawn-brindle. Facial markings should always be black on the muzzle, ears, and nose and around the eyes. English Mastiff Dog Breed History and Origins:
During both World War 1 and World War 2, the English Mastiff almost became extinct. From 1939 up until 1947 there were only 7 living specimens of the English Mastiff dog breed. Several people sought out to preserve the English Mastiff dog breed during the early 1940′s, to find themselves faced with a fastidious task. In 1946, this group of activists found there were at least twenty dogs that still were alive, though within that lot of twenty non of them were at an age to reproduce. It was up to a lone male called Tarsus who contributed to 3 litters, and produced only one living pup. By the end of 1947 seven dogs still alive in England. It was obvious then that cooperation with the Americans was a must to protect the livelihood of the English Mastiff dog breed. By the late 1950′s the English Mastiff breed was on a road to recovery. Besides the leap to America, the English Mastiff has blood from the Great Dane, Bullmastiff, and St. Bernard. These breeds are the believed to be close relatives of the Mastiff. A gentle balance needs to be assessed regarding exercise, because exercise is a must to discourage other health related concerns such as obesity.
The English Mastiff is widely known for their size. When breeding English Mastiff’s accidents have occurred where the puppy is smothered or crushed by the mother’s sheer size during feeding times. Extreme care needs to be given during this time, and simply monitoring feeding times and checking in on the pups will prevent such accidents.
