The Bedouin dog of the deserts in the area bares resemblance to the Canaan, though they were somewhat larger and more aggressive as they were bred purely for guard duty. Breeds like this are referenced throughout history in the area.
In the 1930s, Dr. Rudolphina Menzel, decided to take the breed roaming around the desert and use their intelligence to protect Jewish settlements. They were essentially being bred and trained to be service and guard dogs. 1934 saw the beginning of official breeding programs, producing puppies for homes and military alike. By the late 1940s the breed had progressed so well, that they began to be established as a popular guide dog for the blind. They were very smart and easy to train thanks to intelligence, even-temper and high adaptability. The Canaan dog breed found its way to the United States in the 1960s and to Canada and the UK in the 1970s.
